00 / THE METHOD

Curiosity, with standards

Wonder deserves
a rigorous answer.

01

Notice the ordinary

Start with the questions hiding inside things we see, feel, and overlook every day.

02

Follow the evidence

Build every explanation on careful research, honest uncertainty, and trustworthy sources.

03

Make it visible

Use motion, interaction, and visual storytelling to make difficult ideas feel intuitive.

Field note 001 · Atmosphere

A lightning bolt
races up.

The path begins in the cloud—but the brilliant flash your eyes catch moves from the ground back toward the sky. Build the channel one stage at a time.

00 — BEFORE THE FLASH

The storm becomes a battery.

Collisions among ice particles help separate electric charge inside the cloud. The electric field between cloud and ground intensifies.

The important distinction

Lightning develops in both directions. The pathfinder comes down. The brightest pulse goes up.

≈ 30 kA

Typical peak current of an initial return stroke, reached within microseconds.

~60,000 mi/s

Approximate speed of the luminous return stroke toward the cloud.

30–100 m

Typical height above ground where a streamer may connect with the descending leader.
